Teen Outreach Program

Our Environmental Strategy is “Those Who Host Lose the Most”.  We are trying to raise awareness around underage drinking and the laws involved when adult provide alcohol to someone who is underage.  We have three billboards in the county—one on HWY 54 outside Weaubleau and two on HWY 65—one is north of Preston and one is south of Skyline school.

We have hosted Server Trainings—Alcohol Enforcement Officers have presented to area establishments about laws, being able to identify fake id, their role in stopping underage drinking, and consequences if caught.

Teen Outreach Program (TOP) –Michelle Chapman is the Program Manager.  This is a curriculum based after-school program held at each of the four county schools one day per week for 6th and 7th graders.  It is held on Mondays at Hermitage School.  Phyllis Cook, Christy Dablemont and Stacy Sabala help Michelle Chapman with this program.  Tuesdays they are at Wheatland School and Wednesdays at Weaubleau School.  Michelle Chapman and Karen Nickel facilitate both of these groups.  On Thursdays Michelle Chapman and Pam Jackson are at Skyline.

A typical night consists of snacks, activities, lessons and homework time.  The students earn points for attendance and behavior.  Each quarter they are allowed to spend their points at the classroom store.  At the end of the year the students take a trip.  Last year they went to watch the Springfield Cardinals play.

There are currently 60 students involved in the program.

*Strategic PreventionFrameworkState Incentive Grant. This is a grant that HickoryCounty has received to reduce underage and binge drinking in people ages 12-15.
