Healthy & Active Communities

MFH has identified the increase in the prevalence of obesity among Missourians to be a serious public health issue affecting the residents of the entire MFH service region. MFH has determined that the scope of the problem requires focused funding to support direct program implementation, community education, improved community access and development of local public policy that addresses obesity prevention. In 2005, 15 grantees from around the MFH service region were funded to implement projects that support efforts to enhance the health and activity of local communities and that have the ability to become model programs. Another 18 projects were funded in 2006 to further develop the program portfolio.

The Healthy and Active Communities (H&AC) initiative targets community-based organizations with the specific objective of reaching populations who are at increased risk of developing obesity, such as women and children, racial and ethnic groups, and low-income individuals or families.

MFH has committed $9 million to support nonprofit organizations or governmental agencies in a wide range of programs that pursue the goals defined by the H&AC program and are consistent with MFH's mission.

Grantee organizations framed their project plans around one or more of the following goals:

Goal 1: Increase the proportion of adults, adolescents or children who implement sound principles toward achieving and/or maintaining a healthy weight, which includes healthy eating, regular physical activity and positive behavioral strategies.

Goal 2: Increase the proportion of community coalitions, faith-based organizations or local and state health agencies that provide community education on the importance of good nutrition, physical activity and healthy weight.

Goal 3: Increase community access to physical activity opportunities and healthful foods.

Goal 4: Develop or strengthen collaborative efforts to implement local public policies that promote physical activity and healthy eating.
